First Oceania Project Completed: Kiribati Smart Fishery Management System Officially Goes Live

On May 29, the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development of Kiribati held a launch ceremony for an offshore aquaculture floating platform in the Tarawa Lagoon. China’s Ambassador to Kiribati Zhou Limin and the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development of Kiribati, Ribanataake Tio, jointly attended the ribbon-cutting. The project was invested and built by Kiribati Christmas Island Fishery Company, controlled by Ocean Family, and is expected to be fully completed in September this year; GW-OCEAN undertook the information-technology construction of this offshore aquaculture floating platform.

The Ocean Family (Kiribati) Smart Fishery Management System relies on front-end equipment such as video surveillance, multi-parameter water-quality and hydrological sensors, profiling current meters and meteorological sensors to achieve water-quality and hydrological data monitoring, meteorological-environment monitoring, platform video surveillance and underwater biological video monitoring of the aquaculture area. Based on actual application needs, the project team designed a hand-cranked profile-monitoring winch, using winch-traction motion to replace the traditional fixed-monitoring approach and enabling real-time observation of water-quality data and high-definition underwater video. With advantages of wide observation range, easy control and good mobility, it better matches the monitoring needs of an aquaculture floating platform.

The Kiribati smart-fishery project is GW-OCEAN’s first project landed in Oceania, accumulating rich experience for the company in overseas network deployment, remote commissioning and testing, and cross-border multi-party cooperation. To date, the Kiribati Smart Fishery Management System has run smoothly for one month with continuous, stable and reliable data transmission — not only effectively improving the scientific level of local aquaculture management, but also providing strong support for the intelligent and sustainable development of Kiribati’s offshore aquaculture industry.

Ocean Family (Zhejiang) Co., Ltd. is a national key leading enterprise of agricultural industrialization with distant-water fishing as its main business. Through more than 10 years of professional operation and international practice, it has formed a full-industry-chain operating model of "integrating fishing, processing and trade and connecting upstream and downstream" — from deep-sea distant-water fishing and intensive processing of aquatic products to terminal sales in domestic and overseas markets — with annual sales exceeding RMB 4 billion.

As a model of marine-economy cooperation under the China–Kiribati joint "Belt and Road" initiative, the project’s landing not only advances the modernization of Kiribati’s fishery, but also puts the concept of a maritime community with a shared future into practice, contributing an intelligent solution to the sustainable development of local fishery and setting a benchmark for Chinese enterprises and global partners jointly building a sustainable marine industry chain. In the future, GW-OCEAN will continue to deepen technological innovation and industry cooperation, actively introduce AI technology to optimize the management of the aquaculture process, and keep advancing the digital-intelligence upgrade of the marine industry.
